Find A Domain Name That Really Works!
A great domain name is not pot luck, research research research.. Hindset is a wonderful thing, however, looking back in twelve months or so and wishing you had given your domain name a little more thought will not change it!. Before you go to find a domain name consider the following.
Some Serious Considerations
- What is your website about?.
- Here you should think, what search terms will the search engines decide my website is about?.
- Keywords ( search terms used internet users),
- Competition of other websites.
- The numbers of people searching those terms on the internet.
Before we go anywhere you need to know what your website is going to be all about. A great first website could be all about you. A great place for people to find out more about you, your product(s) and your services. Here is an example Who Is Mark Taylor its not finished yet but I’m sure you get the idea.
Having a common name does not help here, Google returns 52,000,000+ when searching my full name Mark Taylor. Ok so that’s my problem for having such a common name, however with a little work I still got to rank in Google on the first page. If your name isn’t common you will have a much easier time to rank your site.
Did you notice the term in the URL of the website, that’s going to help. The big search engines will place considerable emphasis on the terms that you use within your domain name. Combined with your site description and of course your content your giving the search engine spiders all the information they need to determine what your site is about and where they can place that domain in their index.
Let’s assume you have built a website or your going to be getting one designed, would you like to be in control of it, or would you like somebody else to hold the reigns?. There are tonnes of solutions, however to be up and running very quickly I use wordpress which can be installed very quickly using your cpanel hosting, if I lost you there look me up and Ill hook you up.
Now lets consider the quantity of search volume. Head over to our good friend Google and search the term ” Google keyword tool”. Here is a fantastic free service that allows you to see how many users are searching for any given keyword or keyword phrase. This is important because if you are looking to build a site that is all about your new t shirt printing service, there is no value in choosing a domain name that has no search volume.
A caveat here is if your building a brand, and you want to create a strong presence over time. Eventually as your brand reaches the market, users will search directly for it and therefore your traffic ( visitors to your website ) will increase proportionally.
Competition
Lets consider competition for your chosen website. Before we buy our domain name, you should consider the amount of competition you have in your chosen market. Earlier I talked about my name and how Mark Taylor was extremely common ( more than 52 million competing pages on google ), and therefore very competitive. If I had known a little more about the internet when I chose the domain I would have considered building a brand around a different name.
You already know that your chosen term has a healthy search volume, I would consider 2500 searches a month or upwards fairly good on a broad ( default settings within keyword tool ) search basis. Now go back over to Google and do a search on the term you are considering. Look for the number of results found, if its less than 30,000 you should have no trouble ranking fairly quickly for your domain name.
If you have done your homework and found a good keyword term that is relevant to your market, has a healthy search volume in Google AND has search results of less than 30,000 pages you will need to register it. I prefer Godaddy ( just google it ), and then examine some hosting options. You do not have to choose the hosting that comes with Godaddy, although they will try and get you to tick the box, I prefer and use an alternative company, do your homework here.
Enjoyed this guide to find a domain name, now your started you will need all the help you can get, remember all the search engines love fresh current content, so the more work you out in the more success you will have.
